A Strong Day for Gibraltar Rugby

At Masbro, we’re proud to support Gibraltar Rugby and to see the National team continuing to develop and represent Gibraltar on the international stage. Their recent match against Sweden was an important moment for the sport locally. Sweden came into the game ranked 34th in the world, providing a strong test for a Gibraltar side that is still building its experience at this level.

From early on, it was clear this was more than just a match. There was a good turnout, with a mix of families, long-time supporters and new faces in the crowd. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which reflects the way rugby is growing in Gibraltar.

Team Spirit

This was only Gibraltar’s second official international friendly since joining Rugby Europe, but there are clear signs of progress.

Several players have come through from the youth setup into the senior squad, which is encouraging for the future. The team is beginning to build depth, and matches like this are an important part of that journey.

Strong Moments

Gibraltar had to withstand early pressure from Sweden but responded well. One of the highlights came when Gibraltar intercepted play and ran from halfway to score a well-taken try. That gave the team an early lead and showed what they are capable of. As the game went on, Sweden’s experience and physical strength began to show. They were able to take control and extend their lead, eventually winning 37–13. Even so, Gibraltar continued to compete, defended with commitment, and added points through a penalty in the second half.

More Than the Scoreline

The result is one part of the story, but the bigger picture is the progress being made. Hosting a team like Sweden, attracting a good crowd, and seeing local players step up all point to a sport that is moving forward. The match also showed the kind of environment Gibraltar rugby is creating. Supporters mixed freely, families were involved, and the day had a strong sense of community.
