Gibraltar vehicle owners now have more choice when it comes to registration plates.
Following the earlier launch of personalised plates carrying the 'G' prefix, Gibraltar has now introduced plates that no longer need to carry the “G” before the number. For many drivers and motorcycle owners, that opens the door to a wider range of personalised combinations and a more individual look for their vehicle.
Choosing the plate is the exciting part. The important admin is keeping your vehicle documents and insurance records up to date.
If your registration number changes, your insurance details need to change too.
Gibraltar’s personalised plate system allows vehicle owners to browse available registrations, choose a personalised plate, complete the purchase process and receive the documents needed to register the plate through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Department.
The latest development is the introduction of G-less plates. These sit alongside G-prefix personalised plates and give owners more flexibility when choosing a registration.
The official Gibraltar Plates process explains that owners can choose a plate, confirm and purchase it, then use the Certificate of Ownership with DVLD, along with the required identity, vehicle, insurance and compliance documents.
In other words, the plate purchase is only part of the process. The registration still needs to be correctly assigned to the vehicle, and your insurance needs to reflect the new registration.
Your vehicle registration is one of the details used to identify the insured vehicle.
If you change from a standard registration to a personalised plate, or from a G-prefix personalised plate to a G-less registration, the number on your insurance documents should match the number assigned to the vehicle.
That matters because inaccurate details can cause confusion if you are stopped, need to provide proof of insurance, renew your policy or make a claim.
This applies whether you are updating:

Before assignment, check what DVLD needs from you. The official Gibraltar Plates guidance refers to identity and residency or legal status, vehicle ownership documents, insurance and technical compliance, DVLD registration, plate approval and any personalised plate conditions.

Depending on the stage of the process, you may need a cover note or updated insurance confirmation showing the new registration number.
This helps keep the vehicle properly documented while the registration change is being completed.
Once DVLD confirms the registration change, send the relevant confirmation documents to Masbro.
We can then update your insurance documents so they match the new plate. This is the step that helps avoid mismatched records between the vehicle, the registration and the insurance policy.
After the process is complete, keep copies of:
- the Certificate of Ownership
- updated vehicle registration / logbook details
- DVLD confirmation or receipt
- updated insurance documents
This gives you a clear record of the change and makes future renewals or queries easier.
Do not treat the purchase alone as the final step. The safest approach is to make sure the registration has been properly assigned, the vehicle documents have been updated where required, and the insurance documents reflect the new registration before relying on the new plates on the road.

If you already moved to a G-prefix personalised plate last year, the same principle applies. If the registration changes again, including to a new G-less plate, your insurance records should be updated again. Do not assume a previous personalised plate update covers a new registration change.
Each registration number should match the vehicle’s current official documents and insurance record.
