If you drive across the border into Spain with a vehicle insured in Gibraltar, there is a new rule you should know about. From 1 January 2026, all vehicles registered in Spain must carry a special emergency light called a V-16 beacon. This device will replace the warning triangle that many drivers use when they break down.
The V-16 beacon is placed on the roof of your car when you break down and flashes a bright amber light. It also sends your location to Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) when it is switched on. This helps emergency services locate you more quickly and reduces the need to exit your vehicle on a busy road.According to the DGT, the aim is to improve safety by removing the need for drivers to exit their vehicles to place warning triangles, especially on fast-moving roads.
What about Gibraltar-registered vehicles?
At the time of writing, it is not clear whether the V-16 requirement will extend to foreign-registered vehicles temporarily driving in Spain.According to some sources, including eresrelocation.com, warning triangles continue to be valid for foreign vehicles under international agreements such as the Vienna Convention. Others suggest that Spanish enforcement may begin to expect all vehicles, including those with non-Spanish plates, to carry a beacon after 2026.
“Vehicles registered in other countries that are temporarily in Spain are currently compliant if they use warning triangles... However, some sources advise that all drivers in Spain will need one after the 2026 deadline.”Fines for non-compliance may range from €80 to €200, though details on enforcement for non-Spanish vehicles have not yet been confirmed.
